Sequanna grew up in the inner city in a house that had been in her family since 1958. As a single parent, she has four children, two boys and two girls, ages 14 to 22. Sequanna Taylor is the Vice Chairman of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and a member of the Milwaukee School Board. I suppose almost all experiences are anecdotal.ĭr. The images and stories that follow are all about about my personal observations. Racism is never far away from the collective psyche. Milwaukee is one of the most segregated cities in the country. Like many of the inner city areas of the large fading industrial cities, much of the economy operates on its own terms, cash exchanged. Communities and neighborhoods center around church activities and block events. Much of the social activity takes place on streets and on porches, talk loud, humor high, vehicles fast-moving, music everywhere. The areas I covered represent some of the poorest in urban America. If I had an agenda, it was to show the 3rd world reality of what people's lives are like in the hardcore inner city. I’ve listened to symphonies of anger but also melodies of love. ![]() ![]() I’ve profiled and photographed Black residents, street leaders and on up to the Milwaukee police chief and Mayor. In recent years, I’ve made an effort to connect with Milwaukee citizens whose color is opposite mine, met them in their neighborhoods, had one on one conversations, involvements, disagreements, exchange of prejudices.
